My Colonic Experience - Have You Even Heard of a Colonic!?

I have been sharing tidbits of my healing journey from time to time on this blog! In person, a lot of people have been saying that I look better, have more energy and they are happy to see me out and about enjoying life again! When they ask me how I got well again, I always share a long list of dietary and lifestyle changes I made. But one of the ones that gets the most questions are colonics! Have you ever heard of a colonic, also known as colon hydrotherapy? Well, don't worry because I hadn't either! This path I have been on to achieve optimal health has sure taught me a lot! LOL! 

I had been struggling to regain my health, but as you know from previous blogs, I suffered from severe constipation as a result of eating gluten when I shouldn't have been, and from all the chemicals that were in my personal care and cleaning products. But once all that was cleaned up and I was using all-natural products that I either made or purchased from Young Living (or course!!), I still struggled. It totally makes sense because if your bowels aren't moving, toxins build up and that's how I got so sick. My poor liver is still recovering! :(

Well, one day back in October when the kiddos were at school, I was going down my rabbit hole of research on good old Dr. Google, and I stumbled upon the idea of colonics.  After some research, I got up the nerve to call Lavage, a colon hydrotherapy and detox center in Montclair, NJ. Anne, the owner was so sweet and helpful and answered my 80 million questions! I went in for my first colonic in October of 2016 and from that moment on, I knew I would be getting them regularly! 

So, I tried to come up with the top 10 questions I had before I had my first colonic, which are the same questions that people always ask me! Maybe this will help you learn more about this natural, safe procedure that has literally transformed my health and greatly sped up my healing process!! 

1. What is a colonic?

A colonic is a gentle washing of the colon, or large intestine, with filtered water to effectively alleviate constipation, bloating, gas and abdominal discomfort. A therapist infuses this water into your rectum and an evacuation tube carries the waste away.

2. What exactly happens?

You lie down on a heated massage table, starting and ending on your left side and on your back throughout the middle of the session.  A trained therapist inserts a speculum (small piece of tubing) into your rectum and then there are 2 tubes: one that carries water in and another that carries water/waste out of your body. 

3. How long does it take?

It takes about 40-45 minutes, although I always save about 60 minutes for my session to allow time to utilize the bathroom afterwards to expel any remaining water/waste.

4. Is it painful?

Generally, it is not at all painful. I will admit that for my first few sessions, I was so constipated that it did feel super uncomfortable and a lot of pressure.  I had cramping and at times it was a little intense! If I stayed really relaxed and took some deep breathes, it helped. But now that my colon is soooo much healthier, I simply feel a little "full" from time to time, but no pain or discomfort. 

5. Why did you start going and why do you still go if you are better now?

Well, I started going since I had read that it helps flush out old waste and can help with constipation. Now I keep going firstly, because I don't want to EVER go back to feeling so bloated, uncomfortable and looking like I was 4 months pregnant! Who wants that?! But I also love colonics to help me to continue to stay on my healing journey. I often have herbs along with the water during my colonic and these herbs help to support detox, remove yeast and parasites and soothe the colon. After all my poor colon has been through from all those years of eating gluten and using chemicals unknowingly in my every day personal care products, I figured my colon can use all the support and soothing it can get! 

6. Is it gross and smelly?

I have only had "closed system" colonics. So, in my experience no, it is not smelly at all since all of the waste is carried away in the closed evacuation tubing.

7. Is it embarrassing?

No, not at all. You are covered the entire session with a heated towel in a private room and the only person present is the trained therapist. I have only had a "closed system" colonic, which is the safest and is administered completely by the therapist. So, I don't have to see or smell or touch anything! I even get to ask my therapist questions and she puts me at ease! 

8. How often are you supposed to have a colonic?

Well, that all depends on your health situation and your health goals. For me, I was super sick and toxic so I went once a week for a few weeks, then I went every other week. Gradually I stretched it to once a month. I still go once a month and can actually feel when I am due to go. I get a little bloated and afterwards I feel literally 5 pounds lighter! Never weighed myself before and after...that would be interesting!

9. Do you have to do anything special to prepare?

I stop eating and drinking (including water) 1 hour before and I usually try to remember to wear an older shirt because they massage your back (soooo relaxing) and I don't want the massage oils to stain my shirt!

10. Can you go to work after?

That's been a different answer for me depending where I was in my healing process. When I first started getting colonics, I had to go straight home and rest all day. I usually felt VERY tired and cold and slept most of the rest of the day. I had no appetite and just had broth, soup and light foods. That's how toxic I was! But now, I stop and run errands on the way home...I pass a Wholefoods, so jackpot!! :) And I have plenty of energy to go about the rest of my day. I have a normal appetite now, but I try to remember to go a little lighter that day to give my colon a break! Lots of leafy greens and I usually take a binder (between meals) to bind out any toxins stirred up!

11. Where do you go for colonics?

I have only been to one place, Lavage, in Montclair, NJ. I would likely never go elsewhere because all the therapist there are so sweet, helpful and professional.  After going there for a year, I actually now help out answering phones and booking appointments one day a week! Top 7 Tips to Optimize Your Sleep

Ok, so, have you ever had trouble falling asleep or staying asleep? Who hasn't right!?  Especially parents...we are always listening for that call in the middle of the night, especially when little ones are sick. And sleep in, nope, not when you have kids! That is a luxury of the past for this mamma!

But what I have found is that I feel so much healthier when I go to bed early and get up early! It just seems to work for me, or maybe I just tell myself that since I don't have a choice! LOL! My favorite time of day, actually is early morning when I get up to a quiet house and have a little me time to get ready for the day before the whole house is hopping! I find that to be so essential for me and I even do a little stretching/gentle yoga and meditation during this quiet time! It seems to set my mood and outlook for the day to be nice and calm!

According to Ayuveda, an ancient system of medicine, to balance the body it is best to go to sleep before 10 and rise by 6 or so! So maybe I'm on to something and not just imagining feeling better following this schedule!

But what else can we do to actually sleep at night and not just stare at the ceiling and watch the hours tick by? Well, everyone knows the basics of not exercising too close to bedtime and avoiding heavy meals, alcohol and caffeine too close to going to sleep. So, what other tricks do I use? Well, here's what I have learned, mostly through trial and error and lots of research.  I bet some of this will be COMPLETELY new info for you!

My top tips that I use to sleep soundly and all night: 

1. Light Regulation

I have found that it is essential for me to regulate when I am exposed to light and the kind of light too! I try to get lots of bright light and (if possible) sunshine first thing in the morning and throughout the day. This helps to set my "internal master clock" for being awake and alert during the day.  Just as important, I try to limit my exposure to not only bright lights within 2 hours of going to bed, but to blue light.  Blue light is emitted from light bulbs and especially devices like my TV, smart phone, tablet and computer.  It is best to avoid all screens within 2 hours of going to sleep. But if this is not possible, then the next best thing is to get a pair of blue light blocking glasses (here's a great brand) and wear them at night, especially if you are watching TV or scrolling on Facebook! You can even download this free app: flux onto your computer which actually adjusts the blue light emitted by your computer based on the time of day (so less at night and more during the day!)! It's pretty cool, check it out!

Another key is to have your bedroom ABSOLUTELY pitch black! Now to be honest, I didn't buy into this at first, but I figured I'd try it! So, I removed all sources of light from my bedroom, including covering all lights on alarm clocks. I also purchased room darkening shades.  When travelling, I use an inexpensive sleep mask since I can't exactly bring along my shades! Well, let me be totally honest...despite my skepticism at first, making these small, simple changes made a BIG impact on how well I slept! Darkness really is key!

2. Minimize your EMF exposure, especially at night

What is EMF? It's electromagnetic frequency that you are exposed to constantly with all the Wi-Fi and smart devices in our environment. But did you know that EMF can affect your sleep? That is why I deemed our bedroom an EMF free zone! How did I do that you ask...quite simply! First, I made a rule that no smart devices are allowed in the bedroom while we are sleeping. So that means we unplug our smart TV, we turn off the WiFi and turn off all cell phones.  We also charge phones OUTSIDE the bedroom. So many people use their phones as clocks or alarm clocks (I did) but it is soooo much better for your sleep and overall health to turn off the phone at night and use an old fashion alarm clock or better yet...wake naturally and refreshed with these tips! :)

Secondly, I invested in some EMF protection! Bet you didn't even know that was a thing! Don't worry, I didn't either until recently! I purchased simple little circular stick on "chips" that I put on my phone, iPad and iPod that block the radiation going into your body! They don't interfere with reception at all and they definitely work! I even tried to open my car with my remote key chain and if the chip is in the way, it won't unlock! That was proof enough for me! So, if you insist on putting your phone in your room at night, at least put this little sticker on there to protect you. You can get one here: Life Energy Designs

I also purchased their device that provides a HUGE protective field for pretty much your whole house (same company here's their page on the little triangle).  It is a little triangle that I keep near our router and computer. I even move it to the bedroom at night to not only block the harmful EMF, but it also claims to balance the energy. I feel like I sleep better with it in the room! It travels so easily too! Some of these little hacks really make a big difference, especially when combined!


3. Blood Sugar Regulation

This one proved to really be key for me.  Sometimes I would wake up in the middle of the night and not know why, only to then hear my stomach growling! I have a very fast metabolism, therefore I have to eat a balanced dinner with a decent amount of healthy carbs, protein and healthy fats so I don't have a blood sugar dip in the middle of the night! I also avoid any sugar too close to bedtime. This is especially important for my kiddos! Not only will the sugar rush prevent them from falling asleep easily, but then when their sugar crashes in the middle of the night, they will again be awakened.  So, if you must have a snack at night time, make sure it doesn't contain sugar or sugar spiking ingredients.  A cup of soothing tea like Lemon Balm is a great choice and if you need a little food, cherries can promote sleep! You can even make non-caffeinated herbal tea and put a drop of Cinnamon Vitality Oil or Slique Oil, both help to support blood sugar regulation!

4. Essential Oils and a relaxing routine

Another HUGE needle mover for me was adding in a pre-bedtime relaxing routine with Young Living Essential Oils. I add a drop of Frankincense to my nighttime moisturizer for a soothing and grounding effect.  If I shower at night I also use some Lavender Bath bombs (let me know if you'd like my recipe!) or just a drop of Lavender in my shampoo or body wash.  I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my DIFFUSER! I usually opt for Lavender and Cedarwood (2 or 3 drops of each) in my Dew Drop Diffuser.  For those of you who are oil newbies, a diffuser is a specially designed for essential oils and it safely and effectively disperses the aroma into the air and you get all the health benefits of the essential oils simply by sleeping in the same room as your diffuser! This works wonders for my kids too! They actually ask for their diffusers and they know which oils help them most! For my son, he prefers Peace & Calming and my daughter loves StressAway, which is a blend that contains Lavender, Cedarwood along with Vanilla, Lime, Ocotea and Copaiba.)

5. Cool bedroom

I'm sure this is a more commonly known tip, but I am always cold, so I didn't really think this would work for me. But, the key is to not make it too cool.  Optimal temps (at least for me) seem to be between 65-68 degrees! Turn down your thermostat and you may sleep a little sounder AND save a few bucks on your utility bills! For some putting Peppermint Essential Oil on their feet prior to bed helps them cool down, breathe clearly and relax. But experiment because for some, Peppermint is too stimulating at night!

6. Supplement wisely 

Ok, so this one is probably one you haven't thought of! I found that certain supplements, especially when I take them before bed, really support my sleep! One is magnesium.  I take a powdered chelated magnesium prior to going to sleep and it definitely has helped me get a great night sleep! Most of us are deficient in magnesium anyway (you may want to have a blood test to see your status) and magnesium is known to calm and relax the body and muscles, so taking it at bedtime is a win, win! 

Another issue to consider is not a well-known one and is called ammonia toxicity. Yup, I told ya I would share some tips with you that you have never heard of!!! Ammonia toxicity is a complicated situation that occurs when the body cannot clear the ammonia out that is produced from protein metabolism in the body. High levels of stress cause high ammonia levels. I have found that taking an amino acid called L-Ornithine before bed helps to reduce the ammonia levels in my body when I feel I am under stress. Helps me sleep all night and fall asleep easily as well.

7. What organ is under stress

Ok one last one for you and again, this may be a new concept for you! Did you know that all our internal organs have their own clock? If you consistently wake at a certain time each night, it can be an indication that a particular organ needs a little support! For example, I was waking every night between 3 and 5 AM for a while.  I had no idea why but I learned that is the "lung time." So, I put on some Eucalyptus Essential Oil on prior to bed for a few nights and more night waking during those hours! I have had a lot of personal experience with this, especially with waking from 1-3 AM!

My 5 Favorite Essential Oils to Support Oral Health

I didn't realize how much our oral health effects our overall health until I started doing some research. So, this was my next "rabbit hole" I explored on my quest to get to the bottom of my health issues! As you know from my previous blog post, I started by flipping over my toothpaste and sure enough, there was a poison warning. Why would I want to put something in my mouth or worse, my children's mouths', twice a day that contained poisons....right there on the label....POISONS! What's a Mom to do? Research, research, research and of course Young Living to the rescue, ONCE AGAIN! Their oral care line is not only all natural, with no poison warning or toxic chemicals, but they instead contain essential oils to actually SUPPORT oral health! less toxic product in our home and they even make a kids' toothpaste! Here's some info for you so you too can learn why I love these products so much and trust them for my family:

I even now use their dental floss! Did you know that conventional dental floss contains a non-stick chemical that helps it slide easier-a chemical also in Teflon pans...yup, you put that in your MOUTH! Yikes! Even worse, a recent study by Emory University Rollins School of Public Health shows that this chemical is linked to thyroid disease.  WHAT?  You think you are doing a good thing by flossing and really you can be putting a harmful chemical into your body that may contribute to thyroid who nowadays doesn't have issues with their thyroid..I know I do and so do female members of my family! YIKES.  See how these chemicals are hidden in things we use every day and see how they can unknowingly harm our health? Don't be scared, be empowered and make better choices for the products you and your family use! I am sure glad I learned this! Knowledge is power!! :)

Well, the next thing I stumbled upon for amazing oral health is oil pulling! Every heard of it or tried it? It's really simple to do, yet HIGHLY effective at supporting oral health and helping to get icky stuff out of your teeth, mouth and body! See, toxins accumulate and are stored in our gums, leading to gum disease, body wide inflammation and disease. In fact, 66% of adults over the age of 30 have some form of active gum disease and 60% of 15 year olds have gum disease! Since the mouth is an integral part of the body, gum disease can cause body wide inflammation, immune problems, pregnancy complications, cardiovascular disease and even this is what opened my eyes to understand how important oral health is! So, the more toxins you can remove from your body and mouth, the better off you will be! That's where oil pulling comes in!

Read about the specifics below, but I have found that adding a drop of Young Living Vitality Essential Oil kicks things up a notch! Just 1 drop of the essential oil is all you need, as they are extremely concentrated and potent! My favorite oils to use are below and I always rotate which oil I use so my body doesn't get too use to one to keep my cells guessing!! 

So, what exactly do these essential oils do for our oral health? Well, first off, they help to support the body's inflammatory response. Any time we can help the body lower inflammation, we are helping the body heal itself and protect itself from poor health. Secondly, the essential oils support a healthy immune response.  This is so key because we need a strong immune system to help deal with the bacteria in our mouths and gums! Plus, anytime you are using an essential oil, it is one less chemical you are being exposed to. We want to reduce our toxin exposure as much as possible so we can give our bodies and mouths a chance to be healthy!

Here are some specific ways each of my 5 favorite essential oils for oral health can support your healthy mouth:

Everyone stops me and asks how I keep my teeth so white...OK, I'll let you in on my secret: I use a drop of Orange Vitality or Lemon Vitality Essential Oil (again, switch it up once and a while) to naturally support my pearly whites!! That's it...simple right, and no whitening procedures/strips/chemicals! Best part, one bottle of the Orange Vitality Oil is only $6! That gives you 100 days of whitening power! Top 10 Tips to Avoid Plastics (even BPA-free is dangerous!)

Welcome back to my bog! By now you know me and you know I am all about reducing my chemical exposure as much as possible. There are plenty of ways we are poisoned daily with chemicals and many are beyond our control (see my previous post to learn more: The Top 5 Chemicals I Avoid In Our Personal Care Products.) We have to breathe the air and drink the water...can't avoid those things!  But we are the gatekeepers of our homes, so we ARE in control of what comes into our homes and what our families are exposed to! 

Plastic is convenient, especially when it comes to kids, right moms? BUT, I quickly learned that plastics are dangerous and contain endocrine disrupting chemicals that get into our products, absorb through our skin and get into our food...YUCK! So, I started hearing this buzz word "BPA." That is a short way of saying Bisphenol A, which is toxic chemical in plastics.   BPA has been linked to "linked to obesity, enlarged male breasts, earlier puberty in girls, and increased incidence of breast, prostate and other cancers." In fact, they are so toxic, many plastic additives have been banned in Europe, Canada and an increasing number of cities and states in the U.S. (like CA).  Yikes and our kids are exposed to plastics ALL DAY LONG! I don't want my daughter getting her cycle at 9 and my son developing breasts! This chemical onslaught has GOT TO STOP.

Well, then I thought I hit the jackpot when I discovered BPA free plastic! Phew, a safe plastic, right? NOPE! I quickly learned BPA is not the not only demon in plastics! What you may not be aware of is even “BPA-free” plastics typically leach other endocrine-disrupting chemicals that are just as bad for you as BPA, or in some cases WORSE! In fact, an alternative to BPA, known as BPS is even more harmful! Yikes! And of course, this is NOT LABELED!

So, what's a mom to do to protect herself and her kiddos from exposure to such harmful chemicals in plastic?? Relax, it's really not that hard! Here's what we do to reduce our exposure. Pick something from this list and try to implement it. Then add another in when you are ready! Small changes make BIG impacts! I would know! The more plastics and other chemicals I got out of our lives, the more health issues melted away, like menstrural cycle issues for me, behavior/mood issues with the kids and even sleep issues! It's AMAZING how we don't connect these symptoms to chemical exposure! But I am very proud to say we feel better and better the more we kick this crap out of our house!! 

You can too! Again, baby steps! Here's how you can get started with my top 10 tips to avoid plastics:

  1.  Try to buy products in glass rather than plastic or cans, as chemicals can leach out of plastics (and plastic can linings), into the contents. For example, when I shop for our organic, unsweetened applesauce, I opt for a brand that comes in a glass jar over the plastic bottle. This is especially true if you purchase anything with high acidity (vinegar, ketchup, salsa).  And if you can't find a glass option, transfer it to a glass container for storage at home. Same goes for olive oil and other kitchen oils...fat absorbs the chemicals, so buy in glass when possible or transfer to glass at home for storage. Also buy your eggs in cardboard rather than plastic cartons.  
  2. Don't drink out of plastic water bottles. Instead use glass or stainless-steel bottles. If you MUST use plastic occasionally, don't leave plastic water bottles in a hot car.   3. Only buy essential oils in dark, glass bottles and only add essential oils to water/beverages in glasses/glass containers.  Essential oils are very powerful and can easily leach the harmful chemicals in the plastic right into your food or beverage! If you are like me and mix tons of a DIY oil blends or DIY body lotion/scrubs etc., also store these in glass for the same reasons! In fact, essential oils can be very effective in supporting the body's natural abilities to detox out all the chemicals from your body that are already in there from all the plastics you were exposed to before you started taking these steps to eliminate plastics and chemicals from your life! Some oils I love to support my body's detox include: Lemon Vitality Oil in your water, especially first thing in the AM! Rosemary is also highly supportive. I like to rub a drop or 2 on the bottom of my feet! Thieves supports the immune system, which must be in peak performance in order to allow your body to handle the toxic load of all these chemicals! Again, I put a drop of this on the bottom of my feet and the kids' feet every day! Learn more about essential oils here!   4. Store your food and beverages in glass, rather than plastic, and avoid using plastic wrap or at least don't let the plastic wrap touch your food. You can find options like these on amazon or any kitchen retailer. Image result for free picture of glass food storage container
  5. Never heat your food in plastic. If you must use a microwave, heat up leftovers on a plate/bowl and take the microwave dinners out of the plastic tray they come in and put on a plate! You can cover them with a moist paper towel to keep the mositure in! So much safer than the chemical tray and plastic cover!
  6. Use glass baby bottles and don't purchase baby formula in cans! Babies are even more susceptible to plastic chemicals since their organs, tissues and brains are still developing. Plus, their tiny bodies are very easily effected by chemicals in minute amounts. Our babies and kids deserve the best in life and the lowest chemical exposure! 
  7. Replace your non-stick pots and pans with ceramic or glass cookware. If you bake, line your non-stick baking sheets with chlorine free parchment paper. This makes clean up a breeze too!
  8. Try to buy non-plastic baby toys whenever possible. Opt for materials such as wood, bamboo, cloth or wool.  Keep this in mind for even books, which are often plasticized...paper is a safer option!
  9. Don't let your kids hold store receipts...yup, they are loaded in BPA/BPS and lots more.  Opt for an electronic receipt, which is better for the environment too!                                                                                      Image result for picture of bpa on store receipt
  10. Also in stores, don't opt for plastic bags...choose paper or better yet, bring reusable bags!

If you slowly do some of the above things I have tried in our home, you'll significantly reduce the chemical exposure to plastics for you and your family! Over time, these small changes can help make big health impacts! I hope you have been enjoying and learning from my health story so far.  I am still learning more and more every day.  In fact, some of the things I found out about to try for myself were discovered in blogs like this, written by others who were trying to figure things out regarding their own health and wanted to share to help others! So, here's more of my story-maybe something I share will spark an idea for you! 

So far, I have shared how I have to eat gluten free due to Celiac's Diseasewhat happened when I removed gluten and another food from my diet and how I used a food journal to uncover other dietary triggers like GMO's.  

The entire realization that every food you put on your fork either contributes to inflammation (and disease) or reduces inflammation (and risk of disease) really opened my eyes! No doctor had ever told me how impactful dietary choices can be! This truly made me more aware of what the ingredients are in our foods.  I decided that if I can't pronounce it, we shouldn't be eating it in our family.  The kids were really good about all the changes and I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that I educated them about why we are no longer eating ingredients like dyes, additives and artificial flavorings.  Since they learned all the horrible things those fake "foods" can do to our bodies, they understood why I didn't want them to eat these chemicals.  

Then I got really thinking...I know, me, analyze something...unheard of, right (for all of those who know me by now through my blog or personally, you know I am a bit of a, ummm thinker!!! LOL!) So, I wondered, if things like the patch, used to stop smoking, and the birth control patch get through our skin and effect our bodies, then what does that mean about things like body wash, shampoo, hand soap and deodorant?? Do all the big long fancy names on these products absorb through our skin too? Well, sure enough, once I started some research, I uncovered just that...everything we put on our skin absorbs into our bodies within seconds! YIKES! 

Think about how many products you put on your skin/hair in your morning routine alone...if you're like most people, especially women, there's a ton...shampoo, conditioner, body wash, shaving cream, body lotion, perfume, toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant, hair products and hair spray and that's not even counting all the cosmetic products in your make up routine!! Now think about the long list of chemicals on each of those products! Mind blowing when you start to add up all the chemicals you put on before you even eat breakfast, right!  According to the EWG's site, "The average woman uses 12 products containing 168 unique ingredients every day. Men, on the other hand, use 6 products daily with 85 unique ingredients, on average." Then we wonder why as women we suffer from a higher rate of autoimmune disease and other illnesses. No more wondering for me...especially when I learned all the horrible things these chemicals do to us.

Here's my list of what I personally consider to be the top 5 chemicals I discovered in my personal care products that I think are the most dangerous. I'll also share with you how I either make or buy safer alternatives because you guys keep asking me what I use, so here you go!

1. Propylene Glycol-Ok, I have to start with this one because do you know what Propylene Glycol is...don't worry, I didn't either, but brace's ANTIFREEZE! Yup, there was antifreeze in my toothpaste! WHAT? Yup, go read yours...I actually learned my toothpaste had a poison warning seen below!  I even found some "natural" brands still claiming their source of propylene glycol was naturally sourced, renewably sourced and is approved by the US government.  Now I don't know about you, but the government thinks a lot of things are "safe in small quantities." But my question is, what happens over time from daily exposure to these chemicals.  I decided I no longer want to be a human guinea pig! For starters, I quickly swapped out the toothpaste I use and my kids use.  I use the Thieves Aromabright icky ingredients in there and my holistic dentist just told me that my teeth and gums look "beautiful!"  My cuties use the kids version from Young Living.

If you prefer to make your own tooth powder for pennies, here is what I do: Mix the following in a glass container and sprinkle on a wet toothbrush! This will last you a LONG time!

1/3 C pure baking soda (not the kind found in the orange box at supermarkets...I get mine here: food grade baking soda

1 tsp Celtic Sea Salt

several drops of pure essential oil, my favorite choices are Peppermint or Clove from Young Living, which are both supportive of a clean, healthy mouth!

2. Triclosan-This is found in most antibacterial hand soaps and hand sanitizers, but unfortunately it causes major health issues, like thyroid conditions (yup, how many of you reading this have thyroid issues like me...could our soap be to blame as one of the causes?) and antibiotic resistance! Not good. Read the label on your soaps and body washes and make sure they don't contain triclosan! Mine did!

3. Parabens-increase the shelf life of your products, but do you know they also disrupt our hormones (especially estrogen in women), cause allergic reactions, have been linked to cancer and reproductive issues.  What if women are having trouble conceiving due in part to these parabens? Making simple switches can really impact our health so dramatically! I wish I knew this back when we were 'trying" since I had trouble AND because all these chemicals in the mom's body gets passed along to baby! According to a past study by the EWG, poor innocent babies are being born with 287 chemicals in their umbilical cord blood.  "We know that 180 cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests." This makes me SICK.  We are poisoning our unborn babies and ourselves! What's worse is other countries ban parabens in personal care products and the good USA does NOT! Nice, real nice, right!

So, once I learned all this, I vowed to only use paraben free products! Castile Soap is a safe option for an all-purpose soap/body wash that we dilute with water.  Or you can check out some safe choices here.

4. Fragrance- This one scares me because sooo many things can be hidden in this word because the FDA doesn't require fragrance ingredients to be listed! Sooo not good since the EWG says they can be carcinogenic.  I stopped using any products with a non-descript "fragrance" ingredient. Yet why do people tell me everywhere I go that I smell AMAZING? Well, I use all natural essential oils from Young Living as my "perfumes!" My favorites are StressAway or Bergamot! Both not only smell amazing, but help me to feel calmer and less stressed! Do your research if you decide to give essential oils a try, since purity makes a HUGE difference.  Go here to learn how to select a safe brand.

5. Petroleum- Yup, that's right, Vaseline, which we've all used at some point, but did you know that it contains petroleum, meaning it's a byproduct of the oil industry!? Now, while that particular brand claims to use what the government considers to be "noncarcinogenic," I remain skeptical.  The government seems to think many things are safe in small quantities that other countries flat out ban! And just so you know, petroleum can appear as mineral oil, liquid paraffin or paraffin oil on labels.

So, I now make sure all or our products are petroleum free. For a moisturizer, we use coconut oil (get a huge jug of it at Costco), jojoba oil (I like Trader Joe's) or for severe, cracked skin we cut open a Vitamin E capsule (or Trader Joe's sells Vitamin E Oil)!

But what do you use when you or your kiddos are feeling in need of some respiratory support? You guess it, we don't use the popular Vicks Vapor Rub anymore! Here's what I use on both myself and my cuties:

We mix together Coconut Oil or Jojoba Oil with a drop or 2 of R.C Essential Oil Blend and rub onto our feet! I know, you're thinking, FEET??? Yup, the feet are one of the most effective places to apply natural, health supporting products since the feet are a map of the entire body (google vitaflex foot points)! Plus, no matter where you apply essential oils, like any other substance, they absorb into the skin and get throughout the body in seconds! Now, finally good news when it comes to things absorbing into my body! As long as you are using pure, properly grown, distilled and bottled essential oils like we do, then you will be SO GLAD they are absorbing into your skin and in this case of RC, helping to support your respiration!

Even easier, you can diffuse RC or other respiratory supportive essential oils as an alternative to smearing your kids or yourself with petroleum! You're welcome!! ;)

Of course, we avoid other chemicals I've discovered in our personal care products like SLS, DEA and others, but those are the 5 biggies I wanted to share with you! I hope this has helped to open your eyes to see that in addition to what is on our forks, we need to consider what we put on our bodies all day long!

Don't try to change everything all at once or you'll drive yourself crazy! Just pick up one thing, and I suggest you start with your toothpaste since you put that in your mouth 2 times a day! Read what is in there and if you see some of these scary ingredients or a poison warning, don't wig out, just shop for or make your own safe alternative! Small changes over time make a BIG impact! I'm living proof! The more chemicals you get out of your life, the less your liver is stressed from all the toxins and it can work more efficiently! I have found this helps me have more energy and less symptoms from my auto immune issues!

Soy, GMO's and Food Sensitivies OH MY! Part 3 of my Health Journey!

In my last 2 blog posts, I started sharing my health story by explaining how I discovered that I need to eat gluten free and dairy free and the detox reaction I experienced when cutting these foods out cold turkey. (if you missed them: health journey part 1 and Part 2

So, once I determined I felt WAY better not eating gluten and dairy, (often referred to as a GFCF diet), my health returned, or so I thought.  I felt absolutely great for a while, with more energy, better sleep and to me the most dramatic difference was in my gut health.  I was beyond happy BUT, I had some flares up now and again and by keeping a detailed food journal (I highly recommend everyone do this...especially for kids and their mysterious tummy aches) I discovered I was also sensitive to soy. Once I researched this, I was not surprised I was reacting to this since, according to the prestigious Weston A Price site, soy contains things with fancy names like protease inhibitors, phytic acids (prevent our bodies from being able to absorb minerals and nutrients), lectins, oxalates, oligosaccharides and allergenic proteins that contribute to ongoing irritation to the gut. I couldn't even pronounce some of those things at this point in my quest for health facts, let alone know what they were, but I knew I felt better not eating soy. In fact, I learned when rats are fed these soy anti-nutrients, they fail to grow normally! Yikes...why would I want to feed my children something that can potentially make them fail to grow correctly!? To reduce these components of soy, it is safest eaten as fermented soy such as miso, natto, tempeh and fermented tofu and soymilk if they agree with you. Many cultures continue to eat fermented soy without any health problems.

Non-fermented soy also contains goitrogens - which depress thyroid function. Many people, women especially, suffer from thyroid issues and soy can be a huge contributing factor. YIKES again! 

On top of all that, soy is likely to contain GMO's or geneticaly modified organisms.  Now if you haven't heard of GMO's you need to google this and learn as fast as you can because they are suspected to be causing major health issues.  A GMO food has been changed to contain unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that do not occur in nature.  According to LiveStrong and Organic Consumers: "the rise in autoimmune diseases, infertility, gastrointestinal problems, liver problems, obesity, and chronic diseases may be associated with the introduction of GM foods." Over 90% of soy in the US contains GMO's! Now that can't be good!

Many other developed countries ban or at least have restrictions on GMO's but not the good USA! In fact, GMO's aren't even required to be labeled on our foods (yet)! I am outraged by this and I strongly feel we have a right to know what's in our foods so we can then make an informed decision whether we want to feed that food to our families.  (If you are also disturbed, you can go to: Just Label It to learn more or donate.) That is where the Non-GMO Project comes in.  Look for the Non-GMO Project seal on foods to know they are safe and free of GMO's. Even my kids know that it does not go into our shopping cart unless it has that stamp of approval! You can go to their site to see a list of brands that are safe:

What other foods contain GMO's you ask? Well, unfortunately many foods the average person eats every day such as anything with sugar ( cream, cookies, cakes, muffins), corn (including corn starch and high fructose corn syrup), Hawaiian papaya, canola oil and zucchini that is not specifically labeled by the Non-GMO project.  Organic gets a little fuzzy.  If a product says 100% organic, it does not contain GMO's. If it says certified organic/USDA Organic then it is likely non-GMO as well! However, if the food simply says, "made with organic ingredients" it very well may contain GMO's. That's why we try not to buy anything processed and if the kids do want pretzels or chips or something in a package, then it has to have that Non-GMO Project seal!

So, if you eliminate gluten or dairy for yourself or your children but still have symptoms, consider soy and other GMO's as the culprits. I know my own son ended up being highly sensitive to both corn and soy. That is one of the reasons why it is best to avoid processed foods.  They often contain soy flour, corn and other gut inflaming processed gums, flours, starches and chemicals. Eating as little packaged/processed foods is always the best for your health, whether you are gluten free or not! 

Luckily, I slowly discovered which foods unknowingly were compromising my health. It was very empowering to know that I can dramatically affect how I feel simply by watching what I put on my fork! We have control of our health and our vitality! All food either creates inflammation or decreases inflammation. But we are all different, so what is good for me, may be unhealthy for you to eat. So how can you figure out your list of that trigger inflammation for YOU? There are several ways.  You can do food sensitivity testing (I believe Cyrex Labs is a reputable one), the elimination diet (google's not easy to do!) or simply do what I did for myself and my kiddos which is to keep a food journal. You can easily set this up in Excel or a plain old spiral bound notebook and make sure you note how you feel each day, including your energy levels, any bloating/gas/headache, whether you had a bowel movement and your mood for that day.

So, start being more aware of how you feel when you eat certain foods and be sure to look for that Non-GMO Project seal next time you go grocery shopping!

My Health Journey Part 2-Detox and Dairy Free

So, in my last blog, I shared how I discovered that I need to eat gluten free, how much better I feel eating this way and how much I had to learn to avoid all the hidden sources of gluten. (if you missed it: last blog post).

In this post, I'll share more of my health story as promised! On a side note, unfortunately my blog does not have a comments section at this time, so please contact me or post comments on my Facebook page so I know if you are enjoying and learning from my story!

Picking up where I left off, after eliminating gluten and dairy from my life, I went through a "detox" reaction, as did both of my children. I stopped eating gluten and dairy on October 8, 2011 and that winter I was sooo super sick. Prior to this, I had gotten frequent colds, but nothing major, well except for mono in college (more on that in future blogs since it is strongly linked to other recent health issues I experienced). But that winter, OMG, I had a ridiculous sinus infection for months, something I never had before and hope I NEVER get again! I had it so badly that I had no sense of smell or taste for weeks. The doctors scared me and said there is a slight chance I would never taste again. Now talk about depressing.  I had just learned I couldn't eat some of my favorite foods like pizza, eggplant parm, pasta and crackers and now you mean to tell me I may never taste ANYTHING again.  It was an emotional and frustrating time to say the least! My kids had fun with it, though.  They would often give me blind "sniff" tests to see if my sense of smell was returning.  They would stick nail polish remover (I know what you're thinking-chemicals... and of course I don't use that anymore!) under my nose, raw garlic, onions...the stinkiest of things and I couldn't smell A THING! Well, luckily, slowly both my sense of smell and taste returned! But what an ordeal!

At this same time, my kids went through a detox too and they got super sick. My daughter, who was only 1 1/2 at the time, got bronchitis badly and needed to be nebulized. And my poor son got pneumonia. I treated all this as naturally as I knew how at the time (this was before I knew about essential oils) and we all made it to spring! 

But I wanted to know why we all got so sick. If cutting gluten and dairy out is a good thing and helps you avoid health issues what went wrong!?  Well, turns out I was experiencing what docs call the "storm before the calm!" See gluten and dairy act as drugs and can affect the brain as strongly as heroin and morphine. YIKES! No wonder why crackers and pizza are so addicting! So, when you go cold turkey, you rapidly change your body chemistry and the immune system reacts. So, I wanted to share this experience with you, not to scare you or discourage you from getting some toxic and addictive foods out of your diet. But I shared in case you decide to go gluten free (and/or dairy free) and now you know that you can feel worse before you feel better. One way you can try to reduce the chances of this happening is to wean yourself off these foods gradually instead of all at once like we did! And if you do have some withdrawal symptoms, try not to reach for sugar and empty gluten free carbs to get that opiate fix your body is craving...try to instead get some exercise especially outdoors, put on some feel-good music or get a massage! That's what works for me!

And you may be wondering why I took dairy out of our diets too.  My chiropractor had been on my case about taking dairy out for a while. She knew I had digestive issues and that my son had seasonal allergies super badly. I thought she was nuts, but after doing my own research, I learned over 70% of the world's population does not have sufficient enzymes to digest lactose in dairy! Plus, dairy creates a lot of inflammation and can be make seasonal allergies worse, cause digestive issues, joint pain and inflammation, weight gain, a higher incidence of hormone related cancers (prostate and ovarian), and acne!! We are the only species to drink the milk from another animal! That fact grossed me out, honestly! AND think about it, baby cows drinks milk to get big and fat! No wonder why dairy contributes to weight issues in humans! And another BIG one for me that convinced me to take dairy out of my family's diet is the fact that studies have proven that consuming dairy actually leeches calcium out of the bones and can cause weakened bones and bone related diseases like osteopenia (one was done by Harvard published in the American Journal of Public Health (1997, volume 87)!! Guess milk doesn't actually "do a body good" like the dairy industry would like us to blindly believe. So, when I learned all this, it was a no brainer for me to get dairy out of our diets!  Please do your own research and don't be brainwashed by the big wigs in the dairy industry who are after your money and not your health! Make your own informed decisions about how often, if at all you wish to feed dairy to your family!

Especially if you too have bone related issues, seasonal allergies or joint pain/inflammation, you may want to do a trial to see if dairy can be the culprit. Just keep in mind that dairy stays in the system for a while, so give it 3 weeks or so before you make a decision if you feel better or not! For my son, the effects were immediate in terms of his mood/behavior and his allergies didn't seem so severe! Fast forward to present day and he has little to no seasonal discomforts since we use Young Living essential oils (Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint) to support him naturally! As you can see, there are plenty of choices and options and honestly, now that we have made the transition, we don't miss dairy at all! In fact, on a holiday, my daughter had a little "real" cheese from cow's milk and she instinctively spit it out! She said it was gross! In reality you get use to eating cleaner without gluten and dairy! We are living proof it can be done and I am so glad and thankful to have it out of our diets! Not only do we have way less health issues like seasonal allergies, digestive issues and behavioral issues, but we avoid so many toxins in conventional gluten and dairy! I learned how many Celiacs (remember from my last blog that is an autoimmune disease I have) cross react with dairy and how their health and intestinal lining improves greatly with the elimination of dairy in addition to gluten! This re-confirmed my decision and I never looked back!

So, I decided to share my health story

Ok, so I'm breaking out of my comfort zone here by sharing something personal about myself. I am usually a very private person, but I have come to realize that if I share my health journey here on my blog, maybe someone reading it will relate to something I have gone through and it can help them! My whole mission in life is to help others and I know I learned a lot and had aha moments from reading other peoples' blogs and health stories! So, my hope in sharing this over the course of many blog posts is to help someone figure out their own health issues!

My main health symptom that has plagued me my entire life has been constipation...ok, so you can already see why I haven't really shared this story! From a young child on, no matter how much fruit I ate or how much water I drank, I just couldn't go! And with that of course comes discomfort, bloating...I sometimes use to look like I was 4 months pregnant just because I couldn't go to the bathroom for days. It was embarrassing, being a skinny girl and having this big, bloated belly. I would also get irritable and even depressed for constantly feeling like that. The most frustrating part was whenever I went to see a doctor, I was told the typical "eat more fiber, drink more water, exercise" advice. My gastroenterologist told me I had IBS and it was just something I was going to have to learn to live with. Not exactly comforting, nor helpful. I felt so alone and hopeless.

Would you believe that the only time I did not suffer from this condition was during both of my pregnancies! Now how weird am I? Most women struggle with that symptom only during pregnancy and here I am the complete opposite! So, that gave me the clue that there is a hormonal link to my symptoms.

Then in 2010, after I had my daughter, I was told by her pediatrician to cut gluten and dairy out of my diet to help with her colic symptoms. Of course I did and kept it out the entire rest of the time I nursed her since it seemed to help her.  When my daughter eventually weaned off nursing, I didn't think anything of it to add gluten and dairy back into my diet since it was affecting her, not me...or so I thought. But boy was I wrong!  I instantly felt terrible...worse than ever...bloated, headaches, tired, irritable, random skin issues (pimple like rash on face), foggy brain (like I couldn't think clearly) and of course constipated beyond words. I was shocked. I was never once told that my diet could have anything to do with my symptoms. See, traditionally trained doctors are given a few hours of nutrition training in all their  years of med school. Whereas functional medicine doctors receive 100's of hours of nutrition training.  I now am addicted to listening to natural online health summits that have hours and hours of free talks by functional medical docs and naturopaths. I have learned so much about how much food affects our health. Food either decreases inflammation or increases inflammation and the worst inflammatory food...yup, you guessed it: Wheat!

Gluten is basically like "glue" that holds foods together. For those of you who are not familiar, gluten is defined by the FDA as any type of wheat, rye, barley, or crossbreeds of these grains. So, going "gluten free" can mean eliminating only these grains. But in reality, every grain has "gluten." For example, there is gluten in rice, corn and oats.  I found through trial and error that I feel best on a grain-free diet.  The only exceptions are quinoa and buckwheat, which I tolerate well and enjoy as a source of B vitamins.

So, through this whole process, I learned how inflammatory gluten is to our gut lining and how it causes a cascade of health issues, including something called "leaky gut." This can then lead to autoimmune disease. Well, unfortunately all those years of eating gluten did exactly that to me.  I was unofficially diagnosed with Celiac Disease, a disease in which the little villi of the intestines are damaged and no longer function properly if at all. (by the way, I say unofficially diagnosed because I was already off gluten for several months and my doctor and I agreed that putting me back on gluten again would likely make me so sick, that I would end up in the hospital). So, this damaged intestinal lining prevented my body from absorbing nutrients. It finally made sense to me how I always seemed hungry, craved things like crackers, bread and pasta and ate more than my father! Yet, I have always been underweight!

So, I started to follow a very strict gluten free diet. But I had no idea how hard this could be to learn because gluten hides in so many foods that you would never suspect! It can be in salad dressing, soy sauce, gum, chicken broth, seasonings and spices, candy, you name it! And that's only the food items. Gluten can also be in personal care products (think toothpaste, mouth wash, dental floss, shampoo, lotion, make up), the adhesive on envelopes and stamps and even in vitamins and medications! It was quite a learning experience and if anyone needs help learning how to eliminate all the sources of gluten from their diet and life, please feel free to reach out!

I'll never forget the day I went gluten free permanently: October 8th, 2011! A life-changing day for me that ranks up there with the birth of my children!  I noticed immediately how much better I felt and how my bathroom habits were more normal! At the same time, to lessen the chances of cross-contamination, I replaced many kitchen gadgets...yup, a pain to have to throw out perfectly good stuff, but I couldn't risk getting sick again. It takes a spec of gluten that the human eye can't see to make a person with Celiac or sever gluten sensitivity sick. So, I replaced cutting boards, wooden spoons, our toaster, colanders and put my entire family on a gluten free lifestyle! My son was 4 at the time and at first he asked for bread and his usual cereal, pasta and snacks. But luckily, it wasn't that hard to convince him that he is much healthier not eating these foods that make everyone sick, not just those with Celiac or gluten sensitivity. It creates sometimes silent symptoms and sometimes they can be completely unrelated to the joint pain, depression, anxiety, weight issues, thyroid issues, adrenal issues, immune problems like allergies and asthma and so much more. 

Like everything in life, I believe things happen for a reason. So, I am actually grateful I found out that I feel so much better without gluten in my diet. Plus, this now forces me to feed my family "real, whole foods." We eat mainly lean, properly sourced poultry and grass fed meat, organic pastured eggs, wild salmon, seeds, tons of veggies, fruits and grains like quinoa and buckwheat. Sure, this means I have to cook every day and from scratch, but now there are so many restaurants that accommodate gluten free dinning out! And of course we can occasionally enjoy a gluten free snack item, cookie or piece of bread, but honestly, these foods are no healthier than their gluten containing counterparts.  (obviously except they do not contain gluten!). But select carefully because these "gluten free" alternatives are often loaded with preservatives, GMO's, tons of sugar and other unhealthy ingredients. So for anyone going gluten free for better health, I HIGHLY recommend focusing on real foods and your body will thank you, trust me!!!

Or if you are not Celiac and want to use a much healthier, ancient form of wheat that was the kind of wheat our grandparents ate without any health issues, then you may want to try Einkorn wheat. This wheat is not hybridized like modern wheat of today and has way less gluten. It is much easier to digest, has tons more nutrition and your body can absorb the nutrients out of it! How to Actually Achieve Your Goals/Resolutions

So, a new year, new President, a new you, right! 'Tis the season to make resolutions and goals for the year, in fact, 45% of us make New Year's Resolutions.  Well I don't know about you, but it seems like I have good intentions and set my goals, only to realize that by mid January, I am no longer even trying to achieve them! Is my attention span that short, or is my motivation that low? What's a girl to do?

Well, I've been studying and reading a great deal about affirmations, "I Am" statements and goal setting.  I think this year I finally have a plan of action to actually accomplish my goals this year!! In fact, it's already January 20th and I'm still on track with my action plan!

This year, I am focusing a lot on my health. 2016 was a little rough and I had some bumps along my journey to be healthy (I'll share more about my journey in future blogs)! I have come a long way, but in order to feel really great, I know I have to set some goals and stick to them!

Here's how I am going to accomplish this...I finally now know why I have not been successful in the past at sticking to my goals! It's all about tricking your mind and training your subconscious mind! Sounds weird, right? I thought so to til I gave it a whirl! What do you actually works!

So, how do we do this?

Step 1: use positive "I AM" statements to teach your brain what you want it to believe is true! So you say your goal and begin with "I AM....." So for example, in terms of my health, I say: "I am healthy, strong and have tons of energy!" I repeat this first thing in the morning and really visualize it and get all the senses in there when I imagine myself this way. It's critical to know why this is important to me! It's all about the WHY POWER not your WILL POWER, as Kody Bateman from SendOutCards says! So I visualize myself having tons of energy and feeling great so I can run around with my kids and play with them and be that "involved, fun mommy!"  I envision feeling excitement and hearing the amazing sounds of their laughter! I envision the smell of the crisp winter air as we chase one another in the snow and the feeling of the cold air nipping at my nose! You see, the more senses and feelings you work into your visualization, the more powerful it will become for you. Picture how your life looks and how you feel when you have accomplished this goal.  So if you want to lose weight, say: "I am at my ideal body weight" and picture how your clothes feel, picture what you think about yourself when you look in the mirror, envision exactly how it would feel to be your ideal weight!

Step 2: repeat this "I AM" statement daily...write it down...any goal not written down is just a wish! So write it on a Post-it note or index card and put it where you see it often, maybe on your bathroom mirror or next to your bed so you can read it first thing in the morning and prior to going to bed! And when you say it, mean it and visualize it clearly! If you continue to visualize this, you will literally trick your brain into thinking this is already happening.  What you think, feel and send out is what you receive. It's a powerful tool called manifesting, using the Law of Attraction! So use your imagination and dream it...dream it big!

Step 3: Create habits and rituals to do daily to accomplish your goals AND always remember why you are doing the ritual or habit! There's that WHY POWER again! So for me, my WHY is my kids (usually is!) I also want to teach them that Mommy takes care of herself so they learn to take care of themselves too! :)

Here's some rituals I'm doing in my morning routine to continue my goal to be healthy (of course in between getting my kids on the bus on time!):

  1. 5-10 minutes meditation and Gratitude. I try to think of 3 specific things I'm grateful for. This sets my mind to thinking positively. I also read my "I AM" statements while smelling essential oils...usually a blend called Envision.
  2. Drink 16 Ounces of Water Upon Waking with 1 drop of Young Living's Lemon Vitality Essential Oil and 1 dropper of Ancient Minerals (adds minerals back to your body). This also flushes out toxins, supports digestion, and of course hydrates you.
  3. 5 Minutes of stretching/yoga to get me ready to face my day. I smell or apply Frankincense or StressAway oil while I do this.
  4. Drink a healthy, nutrient-rich green smoothie or a bowl of hot organic quinoa flakes (with sea salt and pumpkin seed oil) and some soaked pumpkin seeds on the side.
  5. Apply EndoFlex Essential Oil for thyroid and adrenal support and DiGize Essential Oil Blend for digestive support
  6. Exercise for 30-60 minutes (sometimes it's yoga, pilates, weights...I change it up) I usually smell or diffuse Peppermint Oil while I exercise to support lung function and endurance.
  7. Read or listen to something motivational for 15 minutes. A self-development book or audio or I love Darren Hardey's daily motivation email
  8. Use Abundance Essential Oil and review my daily goals and then do tasks to accomplish my daily goals. Motivation Oil is another great choice!
  9. Check email/post on FB and make calls for my business

I like to "bookend my day" as Darren Hardy recommends by ending my day with another set of rituals:

1. Read for 15-30 minutes (again, something motivational or self-development)

2. prayer/gratitude after putting on Lavender or Frankincense Oil on my temples and/or in my diffuser (I often add Cedarwood to the diffuser)

3. deep belly breathing and asleep by 10 PM the very latest!

Step 4: Deal with blocks, set backs and challenges:

Now of course there are blocks we encounter that prevent us from doing our daily rituals which halts our process. To overcome my mental blocks, I use something called the Aroma Freedom Technique. This is an incredibly powerful series of steps that help to uncover negative thoughts and emotions that we don't even know we have that are preventing us from achieving our goals. During this process, you use essential oils to relax and locate these negative thoughts and feelings. You then experience the feeling (sometimes intensely), until your body/mind processes it.  Then lastly, you replace that negative thought pattern with a positive, productive "I Am" statement that you repeat daily while smelling a specific oil connected to that statement. Combining essential oils with I AM statements makes them so much more effective since essential oils work on the subconscious brain...the exact part of the brain we are trying to train to think positively and allow us to achieve our goals! I love this Technique so much, that I have incorporated it into the classes I teach so others can learn to overcome emotions and thoughts that are holding them back from achieving their highest potential!

So, how do you accomplish your goals this year...follow this and you'll be amazed:

-Continuously visualize your goal and state it in the present tense, using an I AM statement, such as "I AM at my ideal weight." or "I am living comfortably with plenty of money to enjoy life."

-Take action daily to achieve your rituals that you can incorporate into your routine....write it down on your planner if you have to, but make sure you do your action steps daily.

-If you find yourself forgetting to do your I AM statements or failing to do your daily action steps, ask yourself me and I'll teach you the Aroma Freedom Technique so you can work through any repressed negative feelings or negative self talk!

You can do it, you can do anything you put your mind to and visualize! Make 2017 YOUR YEAR! You are are worth can do it! Now go write your goals and let me know how you are doing with them! Your organs each have a clock!! Here’s the best times for each daily task...


Today was my Grandpa’s birthday. I sure do miss him and his wisdom. 

He was a very private, quiet man, but he lived by the advice: “early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy wealthy and wise.” He was in bed every night by 10 the latest and got up by 6 am. I’m sure he had no idea, but being in bed before 10 is ideal for your body’s circadian rhythm and organ detox! In fact, according to Donna Gates (an Advanced Fellow with the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine), each organ has a clock and detoxes during specific times.

Did you know that the blood vessels and lymph system work hard between 9 pm and 11 pm and the gall bladder rejuvenates itself between 11 pm and 1 am, while the liver eliminates toxins from 1:00 am -3:00 am. So, one of the key reasons to be in bed by 10 the latest like my Grandpa is so that your key detox systems can properly function!

And it is so essential to make your room super dark to allow all your glands and organs to function optimally. I think I am driving my poor husband nuts trying to accomplish this! I cover all the clocks, block the light from the monitors from my kids’ room and we put in room darkening shades! I even wear blue blocking glasses 2 hours before bed since the blue light interferes with the circadian rhythm and sleep cycles! My kids laugh at me and play that 80’s song - I Wear My Sunglasses (At Night)! But I’ve been doing a great deal of work on healing myself naturally, specifically my adrenals and thyroid. I feel like this attempt to sleep in total darkness has helped me a lot by getting restorative, deep sleep!

Ok, now back to my Grandpa…once he woke up he would eat breakfast (he never skipped this important meal!). I agree and eat breakfast every day, but I do things a bit different than Grandpa! You see, I’ll go backwards and fill you in on my story in future blogs, but I can’t eat gluten due to Celiac’s Disease. So, I skip Grandpa’s wheat flakes cereal, sprinkled with wheat germ!

Instead, I wake up and drink lots of filtered water (I’ll do a future post on how I selected my water filter and why!). In my water, I add a drop of pure Lemon Vitality Essential Oil and dropper of liquid minerals. This not only tasted so refreshing from the lemon essential oil, but it acts to detox and re-mineralize my body. You see, our bodies dehydrate overnight and the best way to replenish and hydrate the organs and cells is to flood them with minerals and water! This is because the large intestines work hard between 5 am and 7 am, so hydration and “using the bathroom” during this time frame is key!

For breakfast, I find that a light, liquid breakfast makes me feel best! Science apparently agrees with me since the stomach repairs during 7 am and 9 am, so it doesn’t need a big, heavy meal. In fact, things like eggs and breakfast meats are hard to digest and act to make the body more acidic if eaten alone. Overnight your body becomes super acidic, so the best thing to do is make it more alkaline with a tasty alkaline smoothie or veggie juice! Or if you enjoy eggs, just simply add some alkalizing greens to your eggs or on the side like some sautéed kale or spinach!

I like to make a smoothie with cucumbers, parsley or mint, romaine lettuce or cooked kale (raw kale is tough on the thyroid), some cinnamon, some healthy fat (you can do avocado, coconut oil or even olive oil) and some Celitic sea salt. You can add in a banana or some organic berries too. Blend this up and enjoy! I also have a little pumpkin seeds sprinkled with cinnamon for some protein. But I soak the seeds first (usually for a minimum of 24 hours) to remove the phytic acid and reduce the oxalate load…these are fancy terms for harmful components of nuts and seeds that are reduced dramatically when they are soaked and/or sprouted!

I enjoy this with my digestive enzymes, multi vitamin and either a probiotic or a little side of fermented veggies! The veggies (that I make myself) contain a powerful array of probiotics that help to maintain proper gut flora!

I got to thinking even more about how our organs each have a clock and learned the lungs are the first to wake and repair between 3 am and 5 am. Some people wake and cough a lot and this is because the lungs are one of your detox organs and they are working to loosen and expel toxins! I try to do some slow, deep breathes first thing in the morning to help the lungs do their detox thing!

I also discovered that the heart repairs between 11 am and 1 pm. In fact, apparently 70% of heart attacks occur during this repair time! So, it is best to take it easy, sit down for a relaxed, balanced lunch and even take a nap like Europeans do at midday!

And the best time to work out…between 9 am and 11 am is when I prefer and my organs’ clocks seem to agree! The spleen repairs during this time and your body uses enzymes to get energy out of food, making this the ideal time to do your most physically demanding tasks like exercising!

So, to feel your absolute best, try going to bed the same time (ideally by 10) in a super dark room, getting up the same time (even on weekends) and drinking lots of re-mineralized lemon water upon waking. Then, eat a light but nutritious breakfast smoothie!

Like my Grandpa, maybe you’ll too be “healthy, wealthy and wise!” I love you Grandpa...miss you today and always!

Must Have Essentials for Winter Wellness

Wow, I can't believe the holidays are here already! Don't know if you would agree, but I feel like this year seemed to fly by! So, now how do we not just survive the fall and winter months, but THRIVE? We all want our kids (and ourselves!) to feel great all season long with no health issues, but how? Well, I'm going to share with you what I consider to be MUST HAVE ESSENTIALS for WINTER WELLNESS!! Here's what to consider to stay above that wellness line and feel healthy and vital all winter long:

Of course, we all know the importance of getting the proper sleep (I’ll give you some tips and ideas to ensure you and your kids are getting your Zzz’s in a moment), eating balanced meals (especially protein, fiber and healthy fats at breakfast) and staying well hydrated. But there are some other key things you can do to give you the edge this season.

Thieves Essential Oil: This oil blend is an absolute must have to stay above the wellness line. This is one of the top selling blends from Young Living (remember, I only recommend YL essential oils due to their purity and all YL does to ensure the health supporting constituents are present in each drop of their precious oils). The name was inspired by a legend of 4 15 Century French thieves who made a blend of clove, rosemary and other spices to support their immunity while robbing from the ill. I put a drop on the bottom of my feet and my kids' feet every morning! I've made what my kids call "Christmas oatmeal" (Thieves smells and tastes so good-cinnamon, Christmas!)! Or you can put Thieves in Rice pudding...yum!

Travel tips and must haves for packing, especially for planes and especially for Disney!

Summertime...means lots fun in the sun and for lots of us, summer means travel! Who doesn't love to get away from it all and just relax with your family and friends? We recently went on an amazing trip to Disney-first time for my children! We had an absolute blast and have countless memories that will last a lifetime! Disney really is the most magical and happiest place on earth! Our favorites were Thunder Mountain, Buzz Light Year ride, Chef Mickey's Character Buffet and the Garden Grill Restaurant (the only rotating AND character dining experience in Disney)!


And of course we took many of our Young Living oils and oil-infused products with us! So many people asked me how we used our oils to prepare for our trip, how we packed them for airport security and how we used them in Disney, so I decided to share all this with you here in my blog!

Prior to travel:

Anytime you travel, be sure to take extra Life 5 (a powerful probiotic from Young Living).  This will build up the healthy bacteria in your gut that can easily be thrown out of whack when you travel, eat differently and are on a different schedule.  This is especially true if you are going to places like Mexico!

Also, we made sure to drink extra NingXia Red a week before our trip. How to Pack:

Ok, so it's been a while since I travelled on a plane and I forgot all those annoying rules for packing your carry on. So, here are some tips to make it easy on you:

How to Pack Oils:

I just pack them in a quart sized Ziploc baggie and took in my carry on bag so I had them handy to use on the plane or in the airport as we needed them! This way the oils were treated as any other liquid in 3 oz. (or smaller) container.

Ok, so here's what we brought in addition to the Bon Voyage kit, NingXia Red and Life 5 and how we used each:

Peppermint: Since Peppermint Essential Oil is so supportive of the digestive system, we used this to keep tummy issues at bay from the motion/turbulence on the plane.  We put a drop of Peppermint on our wrists and felt great! You can even smell it from the bottle or on a cotton ball during a flight or car ride. Ginger can also be supportive but we prefer Peppermint!

Peppermint diluted behind the ears helped to keep the kids' ears feeling comfortable too! I diluted it with some coconut oil and added some Lavender too! No issues, PHEW! 

We also used several drops of Peppermint in a glass 2 ounce spray bottle to spritz our necks to instantly cool down in the 115 heat index! Wow did it help! It felt like someone had an ice cube on my neck! So refreshing. I now take that to parks and on walks or anytime I'm roasting and need to cool down! 

RC-to breathe easily all flight long, despite the yucky, dry recycled air that can really dry out your nose and make breathing icky! We sniffed this a couple of times and our noses were very happy! In fact, my daughter got a little stuffy from the dry air at night from the air conditioning. So a drop or 2 of RC diluted on her feet was all she needed! This oil is amazing for respiratory support!

PanAway-for any aches and discomforts from sitting so much. This really came in handy when my hubby and I had sore backs from carrying super heavy bags at the parks all day! We rubbed some of this blend on our tired muscles diluted with some coconut oil before bed and we woke up ready to go the next day! PanAway contains Wintergreen and other amazing essential oils to support discomforts! LOVE IT! Great to use anytime you do lots of walking or activity on vacay (or any time)!

Peace and Calming and Stress Away™ -we used LOTS of these blends to keep us all calm and relaxed during the flight especially for the kids since it was their first flight and we had some turbulence. Not to mention the 4 hour delay! I kept everyone calm and kept that crankies at bay with lots of these 2 oils! :)

Valor II-this one really helped my son, who is a nervous traveler. Valor II helps by giving you confidence and courage! Worked for him like a charm! We usually use Valor but since Gary Young, the founder of Young Living was so accommodating, he made Valor II as an amazing substitute when Valor is out of stock in the summer months! (oils are plants, so of course they have a growing season. I love how Young Living is so incredibly honest and transparent. They would never create an oil in a lab just to keep it in stock. Instead, Gary came up with a very similar blend using plants that are in season in the summer! One of the many reasons why I only trust Young Living oils for my family! No short cuts taken and no chemically created oils! Just pure plant love!! :)

Lemon-I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Lemon Vitality Essential Oil in my water every morning. The kids do too and it helped to give the strange tasting Florida water a better flavor! We took stainless steel water bottles for this since you don't want to put essential oils in plastic (leaches the chemicals out of the plastic and into your water, yuck!). Flavoring the water helped the kids enjoy drinking more, so I didn't have to worry about them dehydrating in the heat.

To Stay Clean and Healthy on the Plane and at the Parks in Disney Here is What We Used:

  • One Inner Defense™ capsule the morning before traveling and up to four additional capsules throughout the rest of the day. This amazing supplement from Young Living has essential oils such as Oregano, Thyme, and Thieves blend, to support normal immunity.* (Just take this far apart from your Life 5. It is recommended to take Life 5 8 hours later so the oils don't affect the probiotics.
  • Whenever we didn't have a sink and soap nearby, we pulled out the Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier in the Bon Voyage kit. I love how it is all natural and actually supports healthy skin instead of drying it out with alcohol like conventional hand sanitizers do!
  • Thieves Spray -to spray the airplane trays before the kids used them for snack time!
  • Thieves Essential Oil Blend: we all put this on our on feet before getting on the plane so we did not have to worry about anyone sneezing and coughing around us in the lovely recycled plane air! In fact, someone stopped me and asked why we all smelled like Christmas! Chemical Free Cleaning: Part 2

I hope you enjoyed my last blog post about all the ways you can use Young Living Essential Oils to make your own, chemical free and cost-effective cleaning products!

Not a DIY person? No worries, I've got you covered because not everyone has time to be mixing up their own cleaners (or at least I don't always have time)! So, you’ll LOVE the Thieves Household Cleaner-A Safe, Non-Toxic All Purpose Super-Concentrated Cleaner! Thieves Household Cleaner has amazing cleansing power and a safe, sustainable formulation. The formula contains ingredients from renewable plant and mineral sources, vegetable-based surfactants compliant with the Green Seal and EPA Design for Environment standards as well as Thieves and Lemon essential oils for extra cleaning power (see my previous blog for more info on the cleansing benefits of these oils). Bottle is 100% recyclable.

You only have to use a capful at a time (ratios for dilution on back of bottle) so a bottle lasts you FOREVER. 

Thieves Cleaner naturally keeps unwanted growths at bay. It's AMAZING on grills and ovens. In fact, here you may even want to use it full strength. I cleaned my toaster oven that was black and nothing would get it clean and it now looks brand new! I'm amazed!

For an amazing grout cleaner: mix 1-2 capfuls of Thieves Household cleaner with enough baking soda to make a paste, apply to grout and let sit at least 30 minutes then wipe clean...Viola!

You can use Thieves Cleaner to clean and sanitize your refrigerator, sink, counters (but just test first on granite since I have never used it on granite before), floors, all kitchen and bathroom surfaces…even toilets and tubs. It gets rid of stains, grease, mildew, you name it! I even use Thieves Cleaner on cutting boards after cutting raw chicken or meat!

I love how this goes far beyond vinegar and water because Thieves Household Cleaner helps you detoxify your body and supports your health! So you are not just cleaning your home, but helping your body heal itself from toxins! So when you clean with Thieves, you don't only have a healthy home and a clean home, but a healing home too!

Thieves spray will get rid of germs and clean surfaces (think shopping cart handles, restaurant tables) and it can also be used on your hands as a hand sanitizer! Great for on the go!

This soap foams, so you only need little bit, like all Young Living products! The best part is, it does not contain Tricolsan which is found in may anti-bacterial soaps...check your label right now! Tricolsan has been linked to heart disease, heart failure, impaired muscle function and altered hormone function to name a few health risks. This soap smells great and is soooo much safer! :)

Thieves Hand Purifier - A great, safe way to clean your hands on the go without any alcohol or harsh chemicals commonly found in conventional hand purifiers. I keep one in my purse and my kids each have one in their back packs and lunch boxes! You know we are totally taking this on all plane trips and amusement parks this summer! :)

Veggies and Produce

Did you know that whether you buy organic produce or not, it is important to properly wash your food, especially leafy greens? Even organic greens contain the highest risk of toxins because they grow close to ground and are easily contaminated from chemicals in soil and livestock run off…yuck!

But I have an easy, chemical-free solution for you: Thieves fruit & veggie Soak and Spray: safely and effectively wash your produce with the cleansing power of three exclusive essential oil blends—DiGize, Thieves, and Purification. Just add Thieves Fruit & Veggie to a basin or big bowl of water: soak, rinse, and enjoy eating your fruits and vegetables as nature intended. The Spray can be used for a single item like if you want to quickly and easily wash a single apple for a snack!

Dish Soap-Did you know most dish soaps contain DEA (a foam booster that may be linked to cancer) which is actually banned in Canada and other countries!

So what do you clean your dishes with?? Young Living Thieves Dish Soap: With naturally derived ingredients, Thieves® Dish Soap effectively cleans your dishes and best part is: NO chemicals, dyes, or synthetics! Phew! Young Living pure essential oils (Thieves®, Jade Lemon™, and Bergamot) work amazingly well to leave your dishes sparkling. It is super concentrated and you only need a little bit. And a word of caution...DO NOT use this dish soap in automatic dishwashers or else you will have houseful of suds! Instead, add a drop or 2 of Thieves or Lemon Essential Oil in the dish washer!


Conventional laundry detergent and dryer sheets are highly toxic and leave residues behind that absorb into your skin! So you rub chemicals into your body all day long such as 1,4 DIOXANE which may be toxic to the kidneys, a neutrotoxin and a respiratory toxin! Not sure about you, but I don't want that in my clothes and I especially don't want my children exposed to toxins!

This icky chemical is in commonly used TIDE.  But a TOTALLY safe alternative: Young Living Thieves Laundry Detergent- much safer than what I thought was a good brand: Seventh Generation Natural free and Clear-got a D rating on the EWG (research your products on this site)…lowest being an F! Whereas if you search all the ingredients in the Thieves Laundry Detergent, they get a highest as a 2 score, where 0 is the best and 10 is the worst. So, it’s likely the safest, cleanest laundry detergent out there and it smells amazing! You get 64 loads according to bottle, but most people say you only need a ¼ capful (1/2 recommended) so you really get 128 loads, making it so economical! Remember, a little goes a very long way with Young Living products since they are infused with essential oil which are very effective and very potent! Plus Thieves Essential Oil blend in this detergent provides potent immune supporting benefits! How crazy is that!

Here are a few tricks I have had success with:

1. Butter or oil stain remover:

1 TB baking soda

2 drops Young Living Lemon Essential Oil


Make a paste and apply to stain. Allow to dry (can even put in sun to dry) then wash.

2 Your Clothes Dryer: DON’T use dryer sheets (they contain sooo many chemicals that stay on your skin (and your children's skin) all day!

Instead, add a thieves wipe to your wet clothes in the dryer.  Or add 2 to 3 drops of Young Living Lavender or Joy Essential Oil to a small cloth and place in the dryer with your wet clothes! Smells divine without any chemicals! And if static cling is problem, here's a handy tip: roll aluminum foil into ball and throw in dryer! Problem solved, once again naturally!

3. Moth balls-soo toxic, please don't use these!

A much better alternative is to simply soak cotton wool balls in Young Living essential oils like Cedarwood, Lavender, Rosemary, Clove or Lemongrass or Eucalyptus and scatter in clothes drawers or in closets. Refresh every few months and you will not have any unwanted visitors in your closets!

So, as you can see, there are plenty of safe, chemical free cleaning products to choose from! You no longer have to subject your family to toxic fumes that create toxic air in your home.  You and your family deserve to breathe easily and avoid all the health problems conventional cleaners may cause (like asthma, allergies and headaches to name a few).  So, please invest in Young Living quality cleaning products. I say invest only because the initial bottle seems pricey, but when you realize how very long the products last and how much you save on your cleaning budget, you'll see how cost effective they truly are! I can't believe how many cleaning products I no longer buy simply because I replaced them ALL with the Thieves Household Cleaner! One happy mom and clean freak here!! :)

Chemical Free Cleaning: Spring Clean Without Toxins!

When we think of spring, nicer weather, sandals and time outside come to mind.  But so does spring cleaning! Not the most glamorous part, but we all need to tackle our messy houses at least once in while! So, you might picture a sparkling, fresh-smelling, organized house. However, when we clean with the conventional products found in stores we might be getting rid of dirt and germs, but we are filling our homes with very toxic and even dangerous chemicals that can have serious consequences for our health. But doesn’t have to be this way.  I am proof! I use to be the "Clorox Queen!" But I got headaches, burning eyes and who knows what else it was doing to my health when I breathed in all those chemicals.

Did you know it takes 26 seconds for chemicals to absorb into your blood stream from your skin and lungs? Crazy and scary, right, especially when there are children living in the house.

Popular Cleaning Products are Highly Toxic:

According to the Environmental Working Group, the U.S. law allows manufacturers of cleaning products to use almost any ingredient they wish, including known carcinogens and substances that can harm fetal development. And the government doesn’t review the safety of products before they’re sold. YIKES! These can cause:



-Reproductive and Developmental Toxicity

-Allergies and Irritation

So what’s the solution? Make or buy your own non-toxic, safe cleaning products that still take care of germs with these recipes, using Young Living Essential Oils!

Here are a few oils you'll need to have on hand to clean pretty much ANYTHING:

Thieves Essential Oil- is a powerful combination of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary essential oils for a blend that is inspired by the legend of four 15th-century French thieves.  They formulated a special aromatic combination composed of clove, rosemary, and other botanicals that they used while robbing from the dead and dying to stay above the wellness line!

Thieves oil provides AMAZING cleaning power and an irresistibly spicy scent.  The best part is, it supports the immune system…so you are helping yourself and your kids stay healthy by breathing this oil as opposed to exposing them to chemicals that harm their health in conventional cleaners! Win-win!

Lemon Essential Oil-degreases, gets stains out of stainless steel appliances and tea kettles, even gets gum out of hair, and it's so cost effective since an entire bottle with 300 drops is only $1

Oregano Essential Oil-for effectively cleaning toilets: add a drop every day! How easy is that!?

Purification- (a blended oil of Lemongrass, Rosemary, Melaleuca, Myrtle, Citronella, and Lavandin) deodorizes smelly shoes, sports equipment, gym clothes, dog smell, even stinky towels (add a drop to the rinse cycle of your laundry)!  I like to diffuse this oil in a Young Living diffuser that disapates the oil into the air, and releases the health supporting constituents (just a fancy word for parts and pieces). Or you can put a few drops of Purification into a spray bottle with water and spray your gym sneakers, garbage can or even your dog (yup, safe to put on your skin or your furry friend!)!

So, how do you use these oils to make your own safe, chemical-free cleaning products? 

DIY All Purpose Cleaner:

15–20 drops essential oil(s) lemon, thieves (can use total of 20 drops in any combination you enjoy)

1/2 cup white vinegar

1/2 cup water

8 oz. glass spray bottle

Drop essential oils into the glass bottle. Add vinegar, and then fill the rest of the bottle with water. Screw on the spray top, and shake to combine. Shake before using.

Baking Soda Spot Cleaner:

This is a great cleaner, as well as extra scrubbing power in the bathroom or on carpets. It’s just baking soda and essential oils – can’t get easier or cheaper than that! It’s great to have around when potty training, too, whether it be the furry kind or babies!

Baking Soda (enough to fill whatever container you’re using – usually about 2 cups)

10-15 drops of any of the following essential oils: Lemon, Purification or Thieves

Save your larger containers like a large spice container because it makes a perfect shaker container. Fill it halfway with baking soda, drop in 10 drops of oil and shake. Then, fill the rest up with baking soda and lightly shake again. Done!

Dusting Spray/Wood Furniture Polish:

 1 tsp. olive oil

 5–10 drops essential oil (I use lemon) 

 3 Tbsp. white vinegar 

 3/4 cup water 

 8 oz. glass spray bottle 

Mix all ingredients together except water in a spray bottle. Swish mixture to combine. Fill the rest of the bottle with water. Screw on the spray top, and shake to combine. Shake before using. This not only shines up my furniture and removes dust, but it also smells amazing, all without the chemicals in store bought furniture spray!

Glass and mirror cleaner

16 oz. Spray Bottle

1 1/2 cup white vinegar

1/2 cup distilled water

6-8 drops of any citrus oil of your choice (could use Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Orange, or a combination)

Ok, so now you have a Clean home, but how do you clean the air in your home safely?

Purification Essential Oil-diffuse to purify the air like I already mentioned, especially if you have pets, sports equipment, or after cooking stinky fish.  It even gets rid of that burnt popcorn smell, aren't you glad you now have a remedy for that awful stench!? Purification is also great at bottom of your trash can-just add a few drops to neutralize odors!

Here's a Great Natural Air Freshener Spray:

10-12 drops each of lemon and lavender to 1 quart of distilled water, shake really well and spray like you would Febreze. You can spray in the air or on fabric (may want to spot test fabric first). This is so much heathier for you than store bought air fresheners (these can cause allergies and respiratory issues).  You can feel good about using this natural spray with children and pets in the house!

DIY Non-Toxic Air Freshener Recipe

2 oz. spray bottle

Pinch of salt

8 drops of your favorite odor zapping oils (orange and rosemary, Purification, Citrus Fresh, Thieves and lavender – all are nice choices, see some of my other favorites below)

Fill with water

The salt helps to emulsify the solution so the oils don’t just sit on top. You could also use 80 proof vodka for a stronger solution.

Apple Pie spice room air freshener (6 drop cinnamon, 3 drops clove)

If you prefer, you can put these air freshener oil recipes into your diffuser (below is a picture of the one I have in every bedroom in our house!).  First fill the diffuser to the fill line with water. Then add your Young Living Essential Oils, swirl with a spoon or toothpick and then cap the diffuser.  Simply plug in and and enjoy the toxin-free scent as well as all the health supporting benefits of the oils you selected! See how amazing that are supporting your health instead of harming it! 

My favorite diffuser recipe is our "sleepy time mix!" We use 4 drops or Lavender and 4 drops of Cedarwood and WOW what an amazing night of sleep! Try it, you'll be amazed how well you sleep and stay asleep!

All you need is a few essential oils like Thieves, Lemon, Lavender and Purification to naturally clean your entire home! How to Naturally Support Seasonal Discomforts

So, it's finally Spring! But it sure doesn’t feel like it here! In fact, it’s supposed to snow! I am SOOO done with the cold and snow. Yet, spring’s arrival means we have already started with my son’s natural routine to support his seasonal discomforts. In the past he has suffered terribly, but now he can enjoy playing outside with his friends and we can open up the windows and enjoy the spring air!  This is HUGE since he had never been able to do this, even when he was on medication! But I hated giving it to him every day and it had side effects that effected his mood and behavior greatly. Now luckily all he uses is this routine and I am so thankful to be able to support his needs completely naturally with no side effects!!

So, I wanted to share what has worked for him, so you can try this out for yourself and your family! I love how this is so easy, yet so incredibly effective for him! Here’s what we do:

We diffuse Young Living Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint Essential Oils in his room. I simply fill the diffuser to the fill line, add 3 drops of each oil and then he wakes feeling amazing and can breathe easily. We don’t do this every night, only when he feels he needs it. Sometimes if he is feeling unusually stuffy, we use R.C. to further support his respiration. (I add 2 drops of R.C to this diffuser recipe).


I also put all 3 on his feet daily. Here’s how: I take an empty essential oils bottle since we LOVE oils and have tons of empties and I add 40 drops each of Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint. Then I add 20-30 drops of fractioned coconut oil (the kind that stays liquid at room temperature). You can even put a roller fitment on the top of this bottle so you can easily roll the blend onto the bottom of feet! He usually puts this on his feet 3 times a day, sometimes more if needed. (if you don’t have empty bottles, you can purchase dark colored amber glass bottles on

My son puts Lavender on his sinuses a few times a day as needed. Just be sure not to get in the eyes! If ever you accidently do get an essential oil in your eyes, your instinct is to use water to flush it out, right? Well, DO NOT use water…that will push the oil further into your eye! YIKES! Instead, use olive oil or coconut oil to pull the oil out!

Last tip: if he feels he needs it, we also put drop each of Lavender Vitality, Lemon Vitality and Peppermint Vitality in a teaspoon of raw, local honey. Young Living Vitality Oils are designed to be taken internally. (Remember, only Young Living Oils can be taken safely internally. To learn more, visit The combination of these 3 oils internally really supports his health all spring!

One note is that Peppermint is not recommended for young children (research this for yourself).  I have been using it on my children (youngest is 5) with no problems. But if you would like to switch out the Peppermint, good substitutions are: Pine, Spruce or Fir! If the child is very young, dilute the oils more heavily...all that means is add more coconut oil to your blend! Easy, peasy!

Spring Clean Your Body: How to Naturally Support your Digestive Health

So, how else can we get our bodies all revved up and feeling amazing as we enjoy spring and summer approaches?  Well, our bodies naturally go through a detox process as our blood thins and our bodies prepare for the warmer weather. So, now is a perfect time to concentrate on your digestive health! But in order for all the organs of your digestive system to function beautifully, you have to keep your system clean and get all the junk out! 

Personally, I have removed all processed foods-anything that has dyes, preservatives, artificial flavorings, GMO's and anything I can't pronounce from my diet and my children's diet!  We also removed most sugar since, believe it or not, sugar feeds the bad bacteria in our gut as well as the yeast in our gut and can cause things to easily get out of balance.  Now, don't get me wrong, I occasionally give my kids a cookie here or there, or a piece of cake for a birthday celebration, but the key is these are once in a while treats. NOT everyday foods!  We also do not consume gluten (no wheat, rye, oats). The wheat of today is so processed and has more chromosomes than ancient wheat and causes major problems in our body including digestive issues, brain fog, joint pain and  malabsorption of nutrients, especially Vit D, just to name a few!  I HIGHLY RECOMMEND a book called BRAIN MAKER by Dr. Perlmutter to learn more!

Clean system: Once you get all the junk out, you will need to clean up your system!

Digestive enzymes--help us break down and get nutrients out of food… but enzymes go way beyond just digestion!  They are needed for all actions in the body including breathing! They are involved in every single biochemical process that occurs in the body and they make life possible. Sound like a big deal? It is because many experts believe that enzyme deficiency is the precursor to all disease!

We are born with supply that gets depleted and needs to be replenished, especially because the soil is so depleted of enzymes. In addition, the little enzymes in foods are destroyed by heat when cooking, so we all need to take digestive enzymes, especially if trying to lose weight!

Lemon contains d-Limonene (research the benefits!) and supports the digestive tract. This is so key because, remember, an imbalance here is often a secret cause of weight gain! So, put Lemon in your water every day! You can also cook or bake with Lemon Essential Oil! My favs are lemon chicken, lemon rice or lemon squares! I can share recipes if you're interested! :)

So here's another tip...Lemon can enhance your mood, so it can help with mood related overeating/snacking which does a number on your digestive tract (not to mention your waist line!)

TummyGize- especially formulated for kids and is pre-diluted so just rub right on! My kids love this oil blend whenever they have any tummy discomfort and I love that it works fast!

In honor of Valentine's Day: Heart Health With Essential Oils

I hope you enjoyed my first post about weight loss with essential oils. If you missed it, be sure to check it out! :)

Since we celebrate Valentine's Day in this month, after you enjoy some special cuddle time with your Valentine, make sure you take time to take care of yourself, especially your health. So, I wanted to help you do this by sharing ways to naturally support the most vital organ in the human body: your ticker! 

Did you know that your heart is about the size of your fist and the average human heart beats 60-70 times per minute? That is about 2.5 billion times in an average lifespan! Crazy, right!

So if you want yours to keep on going for a long time, read on! Everyone knows that exercising, quitting smoking/caffeine/alcohol, getting enough sleep, controlling high blood pressure and maintaining a healthy weight are key to heart health. Of course a healthy, balanced diet, low in sugar, refined fats and processed foods is key to a healthy heart. But did you know there are many essential oils and oil infused products that can support amazing cardiovascular health!

One oil that can support that ticker of yours is a blend called Aroma Life. This amazing blend combines the harmonizing effects of Ylang Ylang with heart supporting powerhouses: Cypress, Helichrysum, and Marjoram. It supports healthy circulation as well as helps to maintain healthy blood pressure already in the healthy levels. You can enjoy these health benefits by applying topically over the heart or massaging on the heart VitaFlex point on the feet (which is on the sole of the left foot below the 4th toe and roughly 1 inch below the base of the toe). You can even add Aroma Life to your diffuser and enjoy the benefits by simply being in the same room as the diffuser! How easy is that?!

Another essential oil, Lemongrass, is a top pick for keeping your heart happy! Lemongrass helps to maintain healthy cholesterol levels already in the healthy range, supports circulation and supports blood vessel health! This is a very "hot" oil, so the best way to enjoy it is to put a few drops in an empty vegetable capsule and then fill the rest of the capsule with olive oil. Put the other half of the capsule on and take with water. You can also cook with Lemongrass, but a little goes a long way. Swirl a toothpick into your chicken pan sauce right before you pour it on your chicken for a spicy lemon flavor!

One other oil worthy of mentioning for giving some love to your heart is Cypress. This oil is not only comforting and refreshing, but it is also very calming and grounding. Staying calm and not stressed-out is always good for your entire body, especially your heart!  But Cypress is also incredible since it supports circulation, healthy blood capillaries and helps your body's natural release of fluids to avoid fluid retention. Massage Cypress towards the center of the body for the best heart support!

Ok, so I lied...this is the last oil for real now! I can't write a blog post without somehow mentioning my absolute fav oil: StressAway! I have a sneaky suspicion that this oil will sneak into every post! (Kind of like Where's Waldo...remember that book from back in the day? Well, StressAway is like my will be hidden somewhere in most posts!)

Ok, so back to StressAway: This blend (of Copaiba, Lime, Cedarwood, Vanilla, Ocotea and Lavender) not only smells AMAZING (like a beach in a bottle) but it is a completely natural solution to combat normal stress that we all feel in our everyday lives. You can't avoid stress, it's a part of life, but how you manage it makes all the difference. And let me tell you, this oil sure does make a HUGE difference! It is so relaxing and makes the everyday stress melt away! Try it whenever you feel you need to de-stress. I find it is super effective when paired with Yoga, meditation or right before going to sleep! Anytime you can find a natural way to manage stress, your heart says a big THANK YOU!

There are also some incredibly effective supplements you may not be aware of that are super starts for supporting heart health!

One is called OmegaGize which combines 3 essential daily heart health supplements in one convenient form: omega 3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA rich fish oil), vitamin D-3 and CoQ10..."making it a recipe your heart will love." So many people I know struggle with their weight. They seem to be doing all the right things: exercising, eating healthy, avoiding over eating; yet they still seem to hold on to a lot of excess weight.  This inspired me to begin teaching classes about how to naturally support your weight loss management efforts and to write this blog post!  

First, did you know that the color blue suppresses your appetite? Who knew! So try using blue plates, tablecloths and napkins in your kitchen! Maybe even add a blue accent wall!  And guess what...RED increase appetite, so, see it was not your fault you overate on Christmas, there was just too much red around!! LOL! 

So those were some fun facts, but now on to how natural measures, like essential oils can support your weight loss goals!
